Recovering from a stroke can be a long and challenging process that requires dedication, hard work, and support. People will likely face physical and emotional challenges, speech and language difficulties, difficulty with memory and thinking, and difficulty with everyday activities. Physical therapy is important to improve movement and balance, while occupational therapy can help with everyday tasks. Speech and language therapy can help those who have difficulties with communication and understanding. Cognitive therapy can help with attention and focus.
Professionals who may be involved in stroke recovery
Medical: Physicians, neurologists, surgeons, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, nurses, and dieticians.
Non-medical: Psycho-social counselors, rehabilitation specialists, family members, social workers, caregivers, community support workers, and volunteers.
Being at home can benefit patients recovering from a stroke in many ways. For starters, the home provides much-needed security and comfort that can help speed up recovery. Home also offers a controlled environment to reduce any negative external factors that could slow down a patient’s progress. Additionally, being home is beneficial in helping the patient feel more relaxed and stress-free, two key ingredients to a speedy recovery.
Second Stroke
Having an initial stroke is a scary thing as it is, but oftentimes patients and families do not realize how common a second stroke is.
Stroke patients often require extensive medical attention and rehabilitation to regain their independence and quality of life.
Prevention
Strokes can be prevented by making healthy lifestyle choices, managing health conditions that increase the risk of a stroke.
